Coral Block; A Story Snippet

I have a story to share with you today! During the month of October, a writing challenge called Inktober was held, where you write a short story every day based on the prompt. On the day I wrote this, the prompt was “Coral,” and I believe the inspiration of my story will be fairly obvious. 😉

“Focus…. Focus….” I mumbled, tapping the end of my pencil on my temple in frustration. The rubber eraser bounced easily off my head, which honestly felt pretty satisfying. I did it again. Oooh, that was super satisfying. “Seriously, girl, focus!”

Tossing the pencil away, I dropped my forehead to the carpet and lay there facedown, hearing my breath go in and out.

The floor muffled my voice. “What kind of story can I write that includes the word coral?”

Well, coral is underwater…. Maybe there’s this kid that goes swimming…. And finds coral….

I rolled over on the floor and stared at the ceiling, instantly noticing all the stained areas where the rainwater had leaked through. Dad should fix that soon.

Flopping back onto my stomach, I opened my well-used laptop and stared at the cursor. Blink. Blink. It’s literally staring back at me.

A notification popped up at the top of my screen. Pinterest! That place always had good inspirations for stories.

After scrolling in vain for a few minutes, I glanced at the clock. 11:43? And still no ideas? My fingers snatched the pencil I’d rejected earlier and I retrieve the notebook thrown beside it. Gotta come up with something soon.

What about…. A girl searching for underwater treasure?

My breath puffed out in a sigh. I had to come up with something before Mom sent me to bed. I needed a story idea.

I always need story ideas. Why am I such a weird writer? Everyone else always complained about having too many ideas and not knowing which one to work on. Man, that would be nice for a change.

But here I was, trying to become a writer, but my brain was like…. It was like coral. All full of holes.

I flipped my laptop shut again and buried my face in my hands. I cannot focus.

I’m dying to know—can you guess what this is based off of? 😁 Not much of a head-scratcher, eh?

Anyway, I hope you liked the story and have a wonderful Wednesday!

Blessings,

Alabama Rose
